If you are single or a DINKer, I would say NOLA, Bham, Char.
If you have kids, Bham, Char, NOLA.
From my travels there, Charlotte has no soul. It is Applebees, Chilis and strip malls. Bham has come a long way in that regard, but I still miss Memphis when it's time to go out and about. The people here are pretty stiff, also.
All three offer excellent opportunities nearby to enjoy the outdoors, if that's your thing (it's mine.) You will just need to get out of town to enjoy it.
