I don't buy the "just wanted to say I saw him" logic.

Why? A person might go to a great sporting venue (Lambeau, The Big House, Fenway, etc..) and see their team get destroyed... but they go in order to see the game and say they've seen a game at that venue.

Lots of people who are into music/concerts collect shows in the same way other people collect other things. It's neat to be able to I saw a legend, and it becomes even more appreciated when/if that legend is gone.

Another example: I saw a ton of really crappy Grateful Dead shows in the 94/95. Jerry forgot words. Bobby cheesed it up. Vince played Samba in the Rain. They were nowhere near as good of shows as they were doing back in their prime. That being said, how many people would have loved to have gotten to see the Dead live, even if it wasn't the Dead in their prime?
