There appears to be a consensus view that it is as awful as I think, so what could this person's deal be? Do they not realize how audible it is? Could they possibly be oblivious to the fact that it is a cardinal sin in Western table manners?

My older brother smacks while he eats. Of course, he also goes to 5-star restaurants and orders chicken tenders and french fries and wants his steak well done with ketchup.
