Strictly speaking on functionality and reliability and to answer the OP's question, no you cannot justifiably spend the extra $700 on the Kimber and improve that drastic in performance. I would get the Ruger and spend the rest on ammo (or get two Rugers 
). You will be very happy with the SR1911, but you would also be very happy with the Kimber.

Or a Ruger and a H&K VP9.
After firing somewhere north of 1,000 rounds from my Ruger SR1911C I really can't see how or why people love to spend so much money on 1911's. Aside from aesthetic touches like bobtails and beavertails and any other tails you want to throw on there I just couldn't justify it. I'm a pretty awful shot, historically, but I can drive nails with the Ruger at a reasonable distance. I can appreciate the lightness of the S&W Bapple posted, but the new aluminum frame Ruger matches it for $600 less.
