Wisconsin, in general, sort of sucks outside of Madison. Milwaukee is getting better and they have a redevelopment plan in motion that will make it much nicer.
Minnesota also isn't very good outside of Minneapolis. Rochester is OK, but it's just an epicenter of medicine in the middle of nowhere, though the city itself is built up pretty nicely.
Was just in LaCrosse last weekend. Beautiful area. It's a bit of a rough river town. I understand there is some crime, but there are also something like 42 bars in the downtown area alone. Good times. The people I have talked to that have lived there think it's a pretty great place. The St.Croix Valley border area between MN and WI is nice place, Hudson on the WI side and Stillwater on the MN side, both cool towns (suburbs of MSP).
Minnesota has a lot of nice places. I don't think I would want to live in southern MN, if I wanted that lifestyle I'd just live in Iowa. The Duluth area is cool, the Detroit Lakes area in the NW is nice, Bemidji and Brainerd area are nice too. Lake of the Woods, the Boundary Waters, there are alot of great things in Minnesota.
