Harley Quinn and her rise to one of the best selling female character in comics

No one could have predicted that Harley would last beyond her first appearance, much less become the title character in a series that cracks the best-seller charts every month. Her real-world path to icon status is bizarre and unprecedented in the superhero ecosystem. But here she is: Jewish, queer, morally questionable, deeply imperfect, and beloved by millions. The company that owns her, DC Entertainment, has declared February 2015 to be "Harley Quinn Month," and now is the perfect time for us to ask whether Wonder Woman is comics' biggest female icon anymore. (And, if Harley's superfans are to be believed, she’s even more of a feminist character than the venerable Amazon.) Here, then, is the strange, hidden story of Harley Quinn, the superhero world’s most successful woman — who she is and how she came to be.
A tl:dr bit but thought it'd be a good one for the comic fans around here as it talks a lot about Harley Quinn's rise in popularity and her origins off page. As someone whose first real extended exposure to her was the Batman: The Animated Series I enjoyed the read.

Wait, when did Harley become gay? I thought she was off and on with Joker? Or is the author using the word queer to mean strange?

I named my dog Quinn after her.

A buddy did these as concept art for Harley in one of the Batman: Arkaham City games. I don't know if they add anything to the conversation, but I thought they looked cool. Apparently Harley and her hyena are really into Crossfit for the game.

Silent Bob named his IRL daughter Harley Quinn - so there's that.
