Thanks to all so far for the advice so far. We're definitely not going to set up ladders or get there at 5 am to rope off an area, but having reasonable comfort and an accessible bathroom is key.

I've done it a few times, but never had a family to consider.

Sacred Heart was charging $5 to access their port-a-lets all day. Not a bad deal at all.

This is going to be the biggest concern imo for people coming from out of town with kids.

like I said, St Charles downtown has a lot of hotels on that stretch or close enough to the route to use the bathroom. Specifically in Lafayette square there are close to 40 portolets that never have a line.

ive grew up going to uptown parades with my family, but we always had a hotel and my dad was always down to set up early. People these days are setting up earlier than ever. Wednesday and Thursday before the big weekend when i was out there this past mardi gras. The crowds are especially thick around Superior Grill, i dont know how anyone would recommend that for a family.

Not to mention as you move to the garden district, it gets pretty dangerous. Seems like the biggest crime area of the route, backing up to a terrible neighborhood.
