How big of a check?
They may have been deciding if they were going to put a hold on the deposit or not, depending on a few different factors. (How much is in your acct, how much the check was for, what bank the check was drawn on, etc.)

Upper six figures. Not terribly large, but more than a week's pay. You'd have thought the check emitted some sort of magic scent the way these people glommed on to me.
