I'm sure the vast majority were simply the result of healthy young men and women having sex. You gotta figure there were a lot less German boys aged 18-25 immediately following the war than there was before. And then hundreds of thousands of foreign soldiers aged 18-25 in their place. People that age like to frick. No surprises here.

Some of this, but in the East, the Soviets basically told their soldiers they could take any German woman as relief for 'battle stress'.

Now, I wonder what the numbers are for how many European women married U.S. soldiers and came here?

In the west, yes. But in the east, no. The latter part of 1944 and into 1945 saw one of the most horrible instances of mass murder and rape in the history of warfare as the Soviets entered areas with significant German civilian populations. The Red Army raped, murdered, and looted on a scale Europe had not seen since the days of the Khans.

No, there was mass rape by the Soviets when they entered Germany. This is not in any historical doubt and is very well documented. The Soviet leadership effectively encouraged it.

Do you think some of the children were born to women who resorted to prostitution, but did not want to admit it, and claimed they were raped? I'm willing to bet it was not uncommon in the U.S. occupied zone where the soldiers were better paid and had access to "luxury" items unavailable to civilians or soldiers in other zones.

Let's not forget that the American soldiers had a few dollars as well. That made them more attractive. Read Leon Standifer's book "Binding Up the Wounds." It's a great piece on the Allied occupation of Germany.
