Have these things changed that much? Remove it, clean the cylinder if you can or if you need to, gap it, replace it, torque it and reconnect the wire. Seriously, have spark plugs changed that much in the last thirty years?

No, but my year(2007) and the ones around it were a pain in the arse. When I was about to do mine, I did a little research and there were tons of people saying they broke the plugs wen trying to get them out. The mechanic even said it's not uncommon for them to break one when they get one in the shop.

Some can be much more difficult to get to - my wife's SUV takes forever b/c I have to remove throttle cable (and the bracket/sensor), vacuum hoses, etc...

Not really that difficult just takes time
