It really does depend on the ki more so than just now versus then. When I told my oldest a little over a year ago when he started middle school after just turning 11, he essentially had no clue. He understood the broad concepts of it took a male and female...we've watched enough science shows to have covered that...but the specifics when it came to people were a complete mystery. But that's him...he's still on the kid side of puberty and it's just not on his radar quite yet. When I check his internet browser history, the only thing on there is YouTube videos of idiots playing video games...

On the other hand, by the time I was that age I had seen all sorts of shite...and that was LONG before the internet. Thanks to a nearly complete lack of supervision and my enterprising neighbor down the street whose dad liked to order porn VHS tapes and thanks to his own electronic savvy creating a de-scrambler for the cable box, I was well versed.
