OK, here's how to play "Smoke On the Water" on the bottom E string.

Voila! You're a guitar player!

It's not a great deal but it's not unreasonable either. I would say that's about avg/slightly above avg. One word of advice, dont take lessons for an extended period of time. You should have the basics down in less than 3 months if you play a decent amount every day. With technology today, you can teach yourself how to play and will develop your own flavor of playing instead of being shaped and molded by an instructor. Another tip, developing rhythm is essential so it should be a main focus. The first thing I always asked any student was if they could dance. If you can dance a little, this should be no problem. If you cant dance, then you will have to really focus on this.

Why $74? Such an odd #.

Sounds high but not outrageous. That said, I haven't had a lesson in 10 years so it may be right on point. Youtube is free, though.

This works out to $37 per hour. For it being broken down into 1/2 hour chunks - I would agree it isn't a great deal, but it isn't unreasonable, either. I suspect guitar lessons run between $25 - $28 an hour at the floor, to $40 - $45 at the top for a non-celebrity teacher. Maybe a little more in a high cost of living city like NYC, San Fran, D.C. area.

So, you're right in the middle.

We recently enrolled our kids in music lessons (one guitar and one drums). That's a little lower than what we pay (20 per half hour lesson).

Maybe I can shed some light on this -

I was a guitar teacher in the Birmingham area for three years.

I charged $25/30 minute lesson. So 4 lessons in a month was $100. 5 lessons in a month was $125.

In the city I currently live in, the average asking price at the music stores for lessons is $32/month. It's a city smaller than Birmingham with no where near the amount of teachers.

If your instructor is good and charging $74/month, it's a hell of a deal.

As a former guitar instructor, I can say they are way overpriced. If you can learn from Youtube, do it. It's insane that I was making nearly $4000/month with about 20-25 hours of work per week.
