Sound reasonable?
Once a week for half an hour.
The instructor is a Professor at SELU

OK, here's how to play "Smoke On the Water" on the bottom E string.
Voila! You're a guitar player!

It's not a great deal but it's not unreasonable either. I would say that's about avg/slightly above avg. One word of advice, dont take lessons for an extended period of time. You should have the basics down in less than 3 months if you play a decent amount every day. With technology today, you can teach yourself how to play and will develop your own flavor of playing instead of being shaped and molded by an instructor. Another tip, developing rhythm is essential so it should be a main focus. The first thing I always asked any student was if they could dance. If you can dance a little, this should be no problem. If you cant dance, then you will have to really focus on this.

Why $74? Such an odd #.

Sounds high but not outrageous. That said, I haven't had a lesson in 10 years so it may be right on point. Youtube is free, though.

I've been following his course for about a month and I can easily play the A,D and E major chords ( the first he teaches) and can change between chirds fairly easy.
It's just when I try to play along to his beginner songs, they don't sound right.
I think my timing/strumming must be off.
I practice every night for about 2 hours.

Sounds like a rhythm issue. Start with just downstrokes on beat. When you get that, go to a down-up pattern. After that, you can play more freely. Make sure you're not tightening up you arm/hand. You're probably having to think too much while playing. Eventually, rhythm patterns will become muscle memory. Keep at it!

Just buy guitarsmith and learn to play when you want.

Eh. I went to lessons to help with learning scales and some theory, and I'm glad I did. I had already been playing for years and was above average I suppose, but getting someone I know that specializes in blues and is one of the best guitarist around here to help was huge. It drastically improved my playing.

This works out to $37 per hour. For it being broken down into 1/2 hour chunks - I would agree it isn't a great deal, but it isn't unreasonable, either. I suspect guitar lessons run between $25 - $28 an hour at the floor, to $40 - $45 at the top for a non-celebrity teacher. Maybe a little more in a high cost of living city like NYC, San Fran, D.C. area.
So, you're right in the middle.

One of the better teachers on the Northshore is $40/hr. La Academy of Performing Arts is about $60/hr for their instructors.
It's really relative depending on if the student feels like they are getting something for the money. Sometimes you get back what you put in.

Yeah I was gonna say, with the internet you really don't even need to pay for lessons anymore. You can youtube basically anything you are having trouble with and there will be something to help you out. That being said, having a 1 on 1 lesson with someone you trust probably would help tremendously. Learn your chords. Build finger strength doing simple half step whole step exercises up and down the neck. Your pinky and ring fingers will be the biggest pain in the arse. Start SLOW. Don't try to learn Crazy Train up to speed day 1, you'll never want to play guitar ever again.

Have the people saying this ever taken lessons for anything?
4 individual half our lessons at $74 is $18.50 a lesson. Less than $40 an hour.
That's a great price. Whether or not he's a great teacher is what we dont know.
