iPhone contacts mess up

Today I had a user bring me his personal iPhone to configure our corporate email on (not my regular gig but I always like to help). He had his previous employers exchange account already configured but no longer active. I delete the exchange account and then load our management app. I hand him the phone back he thanks me and leaves....
10 minutes later he walks back in with a worried look on his face and says he's missing his contacts. Close to 500. Think his iCloud backup will bring them back if he restores?

No. Those contacts were stored on his exchange server, not in iCloud. By disconnecting from his previous employers server, those contacts were removed from the phone.

In my experience iCloud sync doesn't play well with either Exchange nor Google Apps. Disable iCloud or forward his mail to his me.com account. I fricking hate iCloud with a passion, it's my number one reason for hating Apple.

This is what I was thinking... I just feel bad for the guy. I should have thought of that and tried to figure something out before I wiped it clean. Our management app wipes the device as soon as the account is disabled so he wouldn't have had them as long as he did.
