yeah, it must be all those kids who grew up watching him in the 70's and 80's sucking him off these days

His show was popular when a lot of millennials were children. The millennials associate science with him and see him as an authority figure on the subject, even though his credentials aren't incredibly impressive. Now that millennials are becoming adults it gives the news credibility to use someone that the millennials recognize as an authority.

In a way, it has to do with millennials being stupid, but it isn't just a simply millennials are stupid thing. It's a people in general are stupid thing. There are probably examples of this mechanism being used just as effectively on past generations.
