The movie was at best fair, the story was junk; as any southern would have walked home to take care of men like that in the county (and the commanders would have let them).
It was very common to desert one unit to go home and plant the crops and join another unit.
The Guns of the time of the Civil war are like today only as good as the person firing it. Movies always get a pass on the actors hitting anything that walks or moves (as it is a movie) and have the million shot gun.
The movie does flow well and I personally didn't see a scene out of place while watching it.
The pace was slow at times and the bridge scenes not as well thought out as needed, but they did tell another story in film.
