In any decent sized town there will be a vet running a small adoption/rescue at their clinic as an add on. Adopt from them. I have the best dog I've ever owned right now. Adopted her straight from the vet who knew she was a bad arse dog.

Seriously get a Boston. You are from the area and they are a lot like pugs only cooler and more athletic, plus you are a dude and Bostons are more for dudes than pugs. My last boy Boston was named Brady after Tom Terrific, I'll even let you use the name.
