A lot of people are basically saying that it's indie if it isn't popular but Alternative if it is, I kind of disagree. Modest Mouse, MGMT, Arcade Fire, Mac Demarco ect. are all pretty popular but are still considered indie.
A lot of bands that are considered "Alternative" aren't very popular.
