KC,
I think it'd be FINE to buy a Ruger Mk III for your first handgun, especially since that's what I did at 17 y/o. Mine looks just like the one in Shexter's post except mine is blue. Even though 22LR ammo is hard to find, the 22LR is unrivalled for plinking/learning basic gun handling and shooting skills. Get a Mk III, shoot it a LOT and later when you're ready to step up to a bigger caliber you'll have already developed good fun handling skills.
The Ruger priced at $270 would be a GREAT buy for you.
