I did this 20 years ago. Started at a casual place by cortana mall. Then quit and went to Drusilla Seafood which is a step up. Owner threw a fit and screamed at me as if he were 12 years old so I started looking around and got a gig at Manseurs as a bus boy. After 3 months I was a waiter there and made pretty good money. They had career waiters there but I was done before I graduated college because it was time to take an internship.

So, yeah.. start at a more casual place to figure out how to handle the general concept of being a waiter. Most of these places have high turnover so it's not hard to get a job if you're clean looking and personable.
