So I'm looking to jump into investing...well hop is more appropriate

If I plan on putting in less than $1000 and doing the buying and trading myself, is it a waste of time/money? Are there any worthwhile "cheaper" stocks worth getting into right now? I noticed the market was down a bit.

Not necessarily. You can start to build your portfolio and build on it from here, depending on your time frame. Have a plan, and stick to it. One thing I didn't do when I first started and it bit me numerous times.
