Duane Allman. Dude was only 24 when he died! Imagine how much music he had left in him.
To all the people bitching about Hendrix, go listen to Band of Gypsies and then get back to me. Machine Gun is the greatest performance by any musician ever. Period.

Ill put Jimi first, probably cause I'm most familiar. All tied for second for me are Holly, Duan, Otis, Janis and Bradley Nowell. I'm sure I missed some.
I put Hendrix up there because what he did was so original IMO and he made phenomenal music with many different groups.
I don't know how much songwriting and all Duane did but he is certainly a candidate.
Holly was coming up right at the beginning and who knows how the landscape would have been different had he stayed around.
