Beard oil is for relaxing/conditioning.
Waxes are for shaping.
Balms are in between.
I prefer balms, they last longer. I found I go through a bottle of beard oil rather quickly. Though I have a larger beard. 8.5 months worth.
Personally I trim the edges about every 1 to 2 months depending on how it looks, to get scraggly ends off to keep it neat and that's it. Then again I am growing for length right now.
Edit: it's fine to use trimmers to trim, just make sure you have a white or bright colored area behind you when you do it. Makes it easier to see what you are doing. This way there is no accidental beard gouging.

Can never seem to get a consistent trim using trimmers--too much in areas and not enough in others. I like the shadow look, and it looks good while growing in, but I invariably wind up having to shave it as it grows out more.
