LSU Guys Why No LSU Offer For Kavontae Turpin?

Noticed this player Kavontae Turpin (Neville) is visiting TCU this weekend and Texas Tech the next. Both are big on slot receivers in their offenses. And on his film, he looks to be a fast, quick hips player who plays well in space. Just what you would want as a slot receiver. However, no apparent recruitment by LSU. Why is that? Is it simply that he is 5'9" 165 lbs?

probably
LSU doesn't really use guys like this in their offense

Good player but no room for him

Yep pretty much his size holding him back but he will fit in nicely in someone's system

He's really explosive. But we don't really have a history of using guys like that. Even Trindon Holiday pretty much only contributed on special teams here.

We are recruiting Derrick Dillion and possibly Daylon Charlot for that spot. Those are the #3 and #2 WRs in the state respectively.

I think all of the reasons you and others have stated kind of add up. First, he lacks ideal size. Second, he's a bad fit for our system. Third, there are more talented players in state.
All that equals no offer, which doesn't mean that he's not a good player. Clearly, other programs see some skills they like in him.

He's good but yes his size is the reason hes not a nationally recruited player. Could turn into a monster in college or not be able to hold up frame wise. Time will tell with these great athletes that are a bit small/slow or a tweener.
Im with u tho, he seemed to be the best player on the field every time i saw him play.

Interesting. I would have thought you would still want that dimension available to your offense even if it wasn't a perfect fit. Maybe it is simply LSU has some guys who fit that criteria and just rate them a little higher.

Quite a few undersized ATH/WR/RB/DB types have come to LSU and failed. Paul Turner and Jarrett Fobbs come to mind. Both were under 6'0" and would have made serviceable slot receivers for other programs. Paul Turner transferred to Louisiana Tech, where he is the team's 3rd leading receiver. Jarrett Fobbs spent 4 years at LSU and left the team with a year of eligibility remaining because he never saw the field.
The list goes on. Drayton Calhoun. Kavahra Holmes. Jahkari Gore. Etc. Most of these guys were 4 star recruits.

The receivers that thrive in this system are usually big body guys who can block downfield. Smaller receivers are seldom used.
Good luck with him, though.

I understand the size issue with Turpin, and conventional wisdom as to why you wouldn't take the risk. However, I predict, right now, that in 3 years, LSU is going to regret not having offered this guy. He's small...but having seen him for his high school career, he's about the "slickest" player I've ever seen. His vision and ability to cut on a dime are incredible. I suspect he's going to be one of those we look back on and wonder "why"? Time will tell, I suppose.

A lot of people said the same about Damaris Johnson. And while I don't think we ever regretted not getting him, it still would have been nice to have him.
FWIW, regardless of our past with guys that size and how our offense typically works, I'd be okay with offering Turpin.

Someone is going to get a player if they sign him. He was the most impressive player on the field in every game he played in this year.

Here's a pretty good article about him. Talks about him playing some of our other recruits...

Not true. Grades are not an issue.
