I had shingles in high school. It hurt and was irritating but I don't remember it being excruciating like some in here are saying.

When you are young it's not as bad. For me as long as I didn't itch it it didn't really bother me

Usually worse when you are older. The worst part are the ones that continue to have lifelong pain. Fortunately most people don't have that.
