Yeah, I have a 1.7-10. You can see the gun barrel when it's cranked all the way down. That seems like a good size. A quick search of a couple forums says that 1.5-5 is probably the most common, with a lot of people using the 2-7s as well.
Guy I bought this one from swore that it wasn't as bad as his 30-06. I don't know if I believe him or not. It is a 9 1/2 pound gun and has a he of a recoil pad, but damn, that's a mighty large round.
He shot 300grain fwiw.

I believe he told you that, but I do NOT believe what he said is true. BTW, that's some really NICE looking wood.

Yeah, pretty big difference between the two. .375 H&H kicks about the same as my .338 win mag with similar gr.
