That's definitely what makes it so weird. 7 mill for Dempsey/Bradley might've still made us squint, but from a marketing perspective you might be able to say it's worth it.
But even most avid soccer fans in the US have no idea who this guy is. I only just learned how to pronounce his name properly today (Tip: Gio in his name sounds like "joe" not "gee-o"

That's something 99% of English speakers never learn with every Italian word beginning gio

I think most avid fans know who he is even if they're all that familiar with his game. (Hell, he plays so seldom for Juve that most Serie A fans haven't seen much of him in a while).
I think it makes sense marketing, as I mentioned before, for the huge population of Italians in Toronto. Above that, it's an awfully strong message to all their fans.
But the bottom line is that he'll likely be an absolute terror with the stretched play and wide open spaces left in most MLS matches.
