Has to be an academic senior to get 18

I don't think this is correct.

I don't think the year of the student has any bearing on it but it has been given to upper classmen the past few times.

I know Magee was a senior when he got it, Brandon Taylor was a senior (I think), Bennie Logan was a junior. I think Richard Murphy was a junior when he got it.

I know Hester got it after Mauck left in 2004, he had to have been either a sophomore or a freshman then.

You may be right. It looks like just upperclassman. Dickson was the first after Hester, he was a true junior, then it was Murphy as a senior, Brandon Taylor senior, Bennie Logan RS Junior, Barrow and Magee both seniors.

Hester was a true freshman in 2004. He wasn't on the team in '03. This is the main thing that confuses me about the tradition.
