I actually use a nice synthetic brush. I also use pre-shave cream. Never given oil a shot though.

I use an Omega 48 boar. They're about $10 on Amazon, and huge.

No reason to use anything , IMO - you can get the starters in the $30 or $40 range and you'll get at least 3 years out of those. By the time you spend $70 to $120 on your second (or third) brush - that's a 10 year investment.
I don't care for the synthetics, but some people do.
