At this point, I would be happy about it. If LSU was 10-3 or better, maybe not. I don't know if Chavis would have left at that point either, so this might be a moot point.
If LSU beat Bama and won the bowl game(it would probably have not been ND), the losses to Pigs, State, and Auburn would not seem so bad right now.
Of course, I don't know the salaries, so the premise of the OP may not be correct.
