MT suggestions for market index investing

After watching my oil heavy portfolio take a beating for the past month, I think I've decided that I would like to put some money in some sort of simple index fund. Anyone have any suggestions for the best funds for this? ETF vs MF (which has the lowest fee structure?)? Dow vs Nasdaq vs S&P 500? Thanks in advance for your input/opinions.

JMO, but I think that it is a little late for indexing.
Going forward, it is going to be a stock pickers market for a while. It's been a good run, but obviously, things are starting to change.
