quote:Well, the apparent thought process was that the staff was intact with Chavis (as everyone assumed he was going to remain our DC). A decent chance that Orgeron was already lined up to be hired, either by a move like this, or in a couple of months after we could add another guy to the staff (which would explain why he kept chiming in on LSU every chance he had).
what I don't understand is, if Les feels we needed a shot in the arm in recruiting why were were throwing out extensions like candy?
After Chavis left, Miles had some decisions to make. Chavis was good at Xs and Os, but as we saw the past 2 years, that's useless without players (Welter at MLB made our defense very not-good). So while there were plenty of DC choices out there, I think Steele was considered the best recruiter... and thus the best choice. I don't think Orgeron was ever considered a real option at coordinator.
Orgeron had been waiting in the wings, and possibly they intended to add him in March or whenever, but after losing Chavis, it seems Miles had to make sure he didn't miss out there too. So he shuffled the staff;
I can see him talking to Haley and making sure he knew where he stood. If he stays, he gets LBs for next season (next month). If he's wavering, then he's the best choice to move out of rotation anyway.
