I agree. SMU's decline started when the NFL placed a team there. That siphoned off most of the fans who had no direct connection to the univ. Then SMU built a decent sized bandwagon in the 80s which crashed & burned w/ multiple probation penalties then the death penalty.
LSU is the flagship univ. w/ 40K in the stands even during a 2-9 season. SMU could never draw that many w/ an undefeated season nowadays.
