I had one, and had some major problems with the transmission.

No, but you could survive a head-on collision with a tank. Volvos don't run worth a shite, but they are the safest vehicles on the road.

My wife loves her xc90

We have a 2008 and are thinking of upgrading to the 2015

They're tiny as hell I'm 5'11 and could barely get into the thing. I had to consciously try not to hit the gas and brake at the same time and I wear a 12 boot.

It was a rental and got swapped out that day

I had a '98 S-70 that took me to Key West FL, Deadhorse AK, Baxter State Park ME, San Diego CA, and and pretty much every where in between. I had ~250,000 miles on it when it flooded in Hurricane Isaac.

I had minimal maintenance problems with it over 13+ years, especially considering what I put it through. I've never had a S-40, but I'm a Volvo fan.
