I think a case can be made for going after Randy Shannon:
1. Can recruit South Florida.
2. 6 years DC experience, 5/6 years finishing with top 10 D nationally
2001: 6th
2002: 7th
2003: 2nd
2004: 28th
2005: 4th
2006: 7th
3. Has SEC experience

Why is he not a DC right now? Or recently at least?

Don't know Y'all keep saying venables. Clemson defense hasn't been all that great.

I'll go with the former Tiger angle, how about Karl Dunbar? Guy has coached in college, been successful in the NFL for a bit.
Even if we could get Fangio, the problem is that he runs a 3-4, and right now we don't have the personnel at linebacker to make that work next year. Realistically, this would be my list:
1. Brent Venables
2. Clancy Pendergast
3. Jack Del Rio (here's my longshot, Manning may retire at the end of the year, Broncos will go into the tank, not sure of his NFL head coaching ambitions)
4. Ed Orgeron (probably the guy with the highest risk, with highest reward...no doubt the hire will either be wildly successful or blow up in our face)

He actually did a pretty fair job here down the backstretch of Curley Hallman's career. But he won't get a look this time.

Venables
Dunbar
Pelini
Are guys I like. Would have loved to have Narduzzi, but he got the Pitt job.
ETA: Bud Foster, but you know he is just waiting on Beamer to finally let go of that job.
Now that I look at Aranda, he has looked pretty good over the last 3 years. Ohio State game aside, the guy has been putting up quality defenses at Utah St (14th in 2012) and Wiscy (7th in 2013, 3rd in 2014). They lost like 8 guys on defense last year, and still put up a statically better defense this year. The problem would be switching to a 3-4 defense which we do not have the guys to do so.

Well, we might need him for DL coach
I like Mizzu's DL coach as well. Gets a lot of less talent.

Clancy Pendergast as DC/LB with O as DL. Pure success if you ask me. Pendergast coached with Miles in Dallas and with O at USC. I would have liked Tyson Summers but he just took the Colorado state dc gig.

Pendergast looks like an interesting choice. I'd heard the name, but wasn't familiar with him. thought he was still in the NFL.
Summers looks to be too green. but if LSU wanted him, he'd take the gig. do you know the guy or something, seems kind of a random name.

So first in the country in total defense isn't all that great? Tough crowd.
