It's a fricking gadget, not an investment. I thought HeadyMurphey gave you good advice
Eta: I still have an iPad 2 that runs pretty well, especially before the latest update. You aren't running autocad or Adobe premier on it

I ran an original iPad up until about 7 or 8 months ago and never had a problem with it. The downside was that I couldn't upgrade the iOS from 5 or 6 on but it still ran most of the stuff that I needed it to.
to the OP, if you get 2 years out of a gadget like a tablet or smartphone, you have done pretty damn good and you will get two good years out of an Air.
