Movies based on books: What is the worst adaptation ever?

Last year's Winter's Tale sucked arse! Helpein's 1983 novel is my favorite book. The movie took about 1/10 of the book and built brand new ideas around it. It was such a waste! And somebody decided to cast Will Smith as Satan. The only problem with that is Satan is not in the story!
This movie makes me want to choke slam a puppy!

Are you asking about which movies change so much that they may as well be original works with the book's name slapped on to trick a built in fanbase or movies that just plain stunk?

My suggestion is another Will Smith movie. I, Robot. The only thing really similar is robots, some theme of the three laws of robotics, and the name. Really that book wasn't much more than a collection of short stories themed about robots in the first thousand years after modern times.
There are some Asimov books and short stories worth making movies about, but I'm not sure if I trust Hollywood if this and Bicentennial Man is what I can expect.

If it's movies that resemble the book in name and basic plot points only I'd go with Beowulf ('07) or The Time Machine ('02).

Sphere. The book is so intense. The movie missed the point.

The Bourne trilogy.
ETA: The could make some awesome movies if they stuck to the books.

It's probably not the worst ever, but All the Pretty Horses is awful

When The Count of Monte Cristo came out, I absolutely loved that movie. Then I read the book two years ago. I've never been able to watch the movie again.

Agree with a lot mentioned, so I'll add a new one: The Golden Compass.

Timeline and Congo come to mind those books felt graphic and intense but they tamed them down to the point that they just sucked.
