From a business perspective, they'll cut you even faster. Everyone remembers Lawyer Milloy trying to renegotiate his contract and they cut him. This was the defensive co-captain from their Superbowl run.

Kraft over the years has only paid large contracts to three players.

1) Brady - franchise QB, no explanation needed
2) Wilfork - A 350-400lb NT with cat-like quickness that takes up 2-3 guys every play. The most important single position for the 3-4 defense
4) Gronkowski - when healthy, the hardest defensive match-up in the NFL not named Calvin Johnson

As long as you have #1/#2, you have a chance to have an effective offense and defense.

Logan Mankins, Adalius Thomas, Revis as well off the top of my head

Pats don't really play a true 3-4 anymore. They've been base 4-3 for a couple years now although they still have the flexibility to go 3-4 a lot during a game

They released Milloy after a 9-7, second place finish in the AFC East in 2002. Without him in 2003 and 2004, they went 14-2 in both seasons and won the Super Bowl both times. Obviously, releasing Milloy really hurt the team.
