Shooting steel through full choke/fixed full choke older guns

So answer me these questions
Who has done or still does this?
Who has had a damaged gun as a result?
What is your understanding of the damaged caused to the gun? Just at the muzzle and choke? The entire bore of the barrel from hard steel shot damaging the softer barrel steel?
Do you believe the size of the steel shot matters? For instance is anything smaller than #4 ok but larger increases risk?

I did it in an old remington 1100 with a fixed full choke barrel...the damage to the barrel was not apparent, but it did shoot the choke out of it over a couple of years...basically, the pattern kept getting wider and wider and that was the reason...
I just had a modern screw-in choke installed and all was good after that...
ETA: I probably wouldn't shoot steel through a really old gun (i.e. a belgium browning) for fear of rupturing the barrel, etc...

while we are at it on a good shotgun thread....is shooting a foster 1 oz slug thru a smoothbore okay with the largest choke available?

My 1100 started life shooting lead with a mod barrel, and I've been shooting steel out of it for almost 20 years. Nothing wrong with it
