What you want to play is far more important. If you really just want the classic Nintendo games (Mario Kart, Pokemon, Mario, etc.) then get a 3DS. While there are some comparable games on Vita, it will never have those games.

Vita does have some FPS, Racing games, RPGs, indie titles, sports games, etc that play really well. (it has minecraft if you're into that). There's also a Vita version of many PS4/PS3 games. This leads to a lot of interesting games that you can play on a handheld if you wish.

Something to also keep in mind is digital content. You can play a lot of older titles games on 3DS, where the Vita has access to hundreds of PSP and PS1 games.
