Yes, but consider a couple of factors:

1) Movie theaters and Sony would be liable if any violence occurs at any theater showing the film

2) Any theater or chain showing the movie may keep movie-goers away who would be there to see other films. Major factor during the second busiest movie season of the year. I'm sure there was pressure on Sony from other studios and from movie theater groups.

I don't see where they had any other choice when you look at it from a business and not political stance perspective.
