Here's my problem - if Puerto Rico hasn't exploded as a tourist destination, and they're actually part of the U.S., why do we romanticize about a Cuba that hasn't existed in over 50 years - the tourist Cuba that was created by the U.S. mafia.

What are you talking about? Plenty of people, particularly from the Northeast go and vacation in Puerto Rico. I've gone and vacationed in Puerto Rico this year.

Meh - PR draws about 4 million, give or take. Dominican Republic gets almost 5 million. Just Miami Beach in Florida draws 14 million and change. Cuba is sitting under 3 million, right now.

So, I predict it will surge by 2 million or so for a couple of years (newness) - people will invest a little money (if Cuba even allows it) and then people will realize it is a shitty Stalinist run country stuck in 1958 (and not in a good way), and go back to their nicer Caribbean locations.

There is a reason why people go to DR (and they are kicking arse in tourism, right now) and not Haiti - I mean it is the same island, after all. The main difference is that DR has a stable government and political system, and makes efforts to provide a safe and enticing tourist destination. Haiti is a corrupt, dangerous, 3rd world shithole and, apparently, they like it that way.
