Why do teams keep running prevent D near the end of the game?

I know prevent is used to prevent the Big plays from happening. But the Saints were up 31-8. Saints regular D was stopping Bears offense the whole game.

Why not play the regular defense? It's more likely to stop bears offense. It may allow a big play, but playing prevent D pretty much letting the other team score an easy TD.

The results of the game/betting wise don't change in this case, but it seems obvious to run your regular D.

It's about giving up yards in exchange for clock. If they play normal/aggressive D and get burned for a quick score, that gives the other team that much more life

Requires more plays in theory leading to more time running off the clock.

It is also used to deter injuries. You are playing a looser zone, so no quick cutting, and can easily gang-tackle.

When you're up 31 to 8, you just want to get out of there injury free.

I don't know but I'll never understand it. You stop them all game then at the end back off and let them drive down the field. Just play the same aggressive game you've been playing all game.
