For shredding at the house, they are fun. However, if you're obsessed with your sound (like I, unfortunately, am), you may feel a little handcuffed by the lack of customization options. For instance, if you have a distortion setting, at best you'll probably have a small range of distortion. If you had a single distortion pedal (say a Metal Master), you have a very wide range of distortion options to fit a wide variety of sounds. It's really up to you, but it sounds like you only want to spend a little bit, so go with a multi-effects. Vox usually makes some good products.
