Agreed. I think the reason so many people connect to it is because we've all experienced some sort of loss like that whether it be a husband, wife, brother, sister, grandparent, or cousin that we were really close to. Part of the reason I choke up every time I watch it is because I've witnessed first hand both of my grandmothers watch the love of their lives die and be where Carl is. Just to be so lost without your other half. It's so incredibly heartbreaking.
