There are very well known authors in the fantasy genre that you probably have never heard of. Or well known fund managers in the finance industry that every single one of my colleagues is well aware of but you would likely never have heard of.
We all think our little corner of life/interests is much wider than it is. I guarantee you most of my friends and family have never heard of Andrew Wiggins.
I would imagine that individuals posting on topic-specific message boards would generally know the popular individuals in that topic-area, let alone if that area is extremely popular.

Right? I don't have 5000 posts on a literature or finance message board. Not even close to a fair comparison. And your friends/family not liking sports is not relevant either.
I actually guarantee that you have the most posts of anyone on TD (and possibly the entire online sports culture) who doesn't know who Andrew wiggins is so you are an oddball and it is interesting.
