You might have a bad gasket. You shouldn't have let it get that hot in the first place.

Once the egg is hot its damn hard to cool down. Usually the temp will drop when you throw a big hunk of meat on it. Also you could try throwing a big cup of wood chips or a few hunks of soaked wood on your coals to knock it down it a bit.
