Basically,
- Modern Language Association (MLA) handbook says one space
- Chicago style handbook says one space
- Typographers agree on one space
- The reason why some people think two spaces is necessary is because typewriters used monospaced fonts
- Modern computers use proportional fonts where the area of a space between the period and the beginning of the next sentence is already correct
