Cutting preseason in half?

quote:

Preseason games are rarely well-attended and pretty much never sell out, so you wouldn't be eliminating too much revenue for owners by getting rid of three or four games. The NBA has already extended the All-Star break from being just a weekend in the past to being a full week of rest leading up to the trade deadline. They recognize the importance of rest and while maximizing their revenue, they're still trying to find a solution to take care of the players on the court.

From Grantland --

quote:

The goal is to start the regular season earlier and stretch the full 82-game schedule over about 10 additional days, sources say. That would allow the league to slice off a couple of back-to-backs from each team's schedule, and in the process limit some of the rest imbalance that is inevitable in juggling hundreds of games across 29 arenas.

Looks like the NBA is exploring an area that the NFL would likely never touch.

Adam Silver really is awesome. A lot of commissioners wouldn't make a change due to ego. Pop is basically making a laughing stock of the NBA schedule, and Silver decides to make a change instead of acting butt hurt.

Good. I want to keep the season at 82 games with 12:00 minute for purposes of setting records and simple familiarity, but I have no problem with this at all. Who would not want ten more days of the regular season?

It's probably a flexibility that the NBA has that the NFL doesn't because there are a lot more basketball games and games already can be played closer together. Giving the players more rest might actually help NBA time coverage.

It's easy to "explore" this when you play 41 home games plus preseason.

I hate NFL preseason, but 1/5 of the season ticket sales for the year are those 2 pesky preseason home games.

NFL owners won't give this up, regardless of how much we bitch.

The players need to nut up and play more back to backs. The NBAs fricking playoffs last 2 months. April-June. That's insane.
