Not too long ago, rather than Bowflex or universal machine I decided to go with a Power rack + Free weight + Olympic barbell. I thought Lasik surgery was the best money I've spent in my life but this purchase actually surpassed that and literally changed my life.
Day after heavy squat day = time to fap. I love my post leg day fap (serious)
Power rack $450 shipped Amazon
300LB weight plate & Olympic Barbell = $210 at Dick's sporting goods was the cheapest I found. I'll add more weith later on
2 Horse stall mats $40 X 2 at Tractor Supply
Bench $70-$150
Weight tree $30 at Walmart

Why not a simple rack with bench, bar at top, simple cable maybe. Barbells and some dumbells, adjustible dumbell system at least. I feel like you get more mileage out of that than some bowflex type deal.

I have a pullup bar, a couple of chairs to do dips between, and a backpack that I fill with sand. The sand goes in 1 QT zip loc bags so I can vary the weight. Each bag holds about 3 lbs of sand. I bought the bar, the sand, and the zip locs. The rest I already had. Total cost about $35.

Tell him to join planet fitness.
$10/month, it'll take 17 years to equal the cost of a bow flex, and he can jerk off to a bunch of out of shape blue hairs.

1. A set of adjustable dumbbells
2. A bench
3. A good structured program like what Sabi mentioned.
No need to drop a few grand on a gadget that won't work any better than the above.
